Jindra Viková

Jindra Viková’s work is multifaceted: it is rich and polished like a diamond while lacking any hint of cold calculation. On the contrary, it is full of powerful emotions and reactions to sudden mood shifts, which are naturally transferred to the viewer.
Jindra Viková is well aware of the power possesed by womankind. And by herself personally. We could perhaps describe her as a feminist but at the same time, she is a home-maker, creating a calm and homely atmosphere for her husband, the eminent photographer Pavel Baňka, wich whom she leads a sort of artistic “permanent dialogue”.

[…] In Viková’s work, there is a clear determination to freely and honestly express herself as an artist and a human being, to be free and self-confident, possessing her own firm view of the world and of what human life should be like. In fact, the whole of Jindra Viková’s work is thematically centred around life itself. And while doing that, it touches on the transcendent, and by extension, the eternal.

Jindra Viková has been a long-standing presence on the international art scene. She has, ever since her studend years, taken part in international activities – not only through her creative work and participation in exhibition activities (rich both in their scope and the variety of media she explores), but other activities as well, such as international symposia, residential artist stays, including long term-ones and working as a visiting lecturer at foreign universities. Beyond that, the artist’s frequent involvement in various international committees – above all in the field of ceramic art – her “native” field, so to speak – has been valuable not just in terms of gaining fresh experience and insight. It has also provided a platform for gaining and maintaining long-lasting international friendships and connections.

[…] It should also be noted that Viková’s work has always (and especially in recent years) reached far beyond the realm of ceramis art – it is, without any proclamative declarations, trully and naturally mutlimedial. The root of the multi-layered nature of her activities is likely to be found in her inquisitiveness and an insatiable desire to discover new possibilities of expression, a prominent trait of the artist’s character.

Jindra Viková studied from 1960-1964 at the Secondary Art School, Prague, Czech Republic, and from 1964-1970 at the University of Applied Arts, Prague, Czech Republic. Since that time she has exhibited her works in solo and group exhibitions in Europe and world wide. Her works are in many countries in private and public collections. From 1991 to 2016 she taught at several universities in the USA and in the Czech Republic. During those years she received several well-known awards.
