Eva Chmelova

Eva Chmelova

Belonging to a generation that entered the Czech artistic scene in the late 1980s, Eva Chmelová is a substantive artist revering first and foremost traditional work with colour that in her case forms up one of the pillars of her overall expression. The high quality of her work is achieved by combining dense meshes of colour and sensitive penetrating glazes, applied repeatedly in layers. Concentrating on fixed texture and elaboratd composition, she consciously distances herself from unconnected randomness and unfounded experimentation.

Eva Chmelová belongs to a generation that entered the Czech artistic scene in the late 1980s. After studying at AVU in Prague, she started to present her work independently (sometimes together with Ivan Exner or Stefan Milkov) or at larger exhibitions. In 1989, together with a group of fellow artists, she founded the artistic group Tunel, which kickstarted her artistic career. Since the mid-1990s, Eva Chmelová has been focused more on independent presentations rendering a larger scope for individual layered mythology. Chmelová is a substantive artist revering first and foremost traditional work with colour that in her case forms up one of the pillars of her overall expression. The high quality of her work is achieved by combining dense meshes and sensitive penetrating glazes, applied repeatedly. Concentrating on fixed texture and elaboratd composition, she consciously distances herself from unconnected randomness and unfounded experimentation.

From the 1990s onwards, within the scope of the post-modern trend, Eva has been focused on reflections based on exempt morphology of signs and symbols. Stories unfolded beyond concrete time and space and touching general human memory – an archetypal plain buried deep down in our subconscious. Eva’s most recent works record a definite shift. Eva Chmelová leans towards a kind of more civil existence. It seems that she lives more in the presen and her works point rather to the experience of the very “right now”. She links her evident love of colour with clearly articulated forms flowing on a gently twinkling canvas. The viewer is often offered a primaeval rebus, a hieroglyphic story, or a sneaky riddle. That is how magnificent garnet apples and spicy red peppers enter into the artist’s iconography, as well as drapes inducing an atmosphere of secrecy and unresolved situations or confusing illusions.
