Andy Allen

Visual Artist and Curator, born 1989 in the United Kingdom, lives and works in Prague. He has been exhibiting extensively since graduating throughout the UK and internationally. His Paintings are held in prestigious public and private collections throughout the world including The Duke and Duchess of Devonshire’s Collection at Chatsworth House. He has curated several projects and exhibitions, working with the Arts Council England, gallerists, and private businesses to put together shows in traditional white wall settings as well as unconventional spaces. He has also been involved in planning and delivering discussions, talks and workshops to support his curatorial practice at events, and in several institutions in the UK.

“Between the real and the unfamiliar, my practice seeks to examine the magical within the mundane.

The subject matter comes from a variety of sources, both first hand observation, and secondary sources including magazines and the Internet. I then build a painting ‘prompt’, generally a collage or sketch from deliberately low quality and ambiguous images.

Digital manipulation removes the works from the photographic and the physicality of painting transforms the images into a dream like environment that invite the viewer in. I find this forces intuition, and through a process of brutal decision-making the painting evolves. Chance is as important as a decision; progression and moments that create nuances within the banal, both in subject matter and painting process. By abandoning the ‘prompt’ the painting develops independently and through destruction of image and material behavior the work begins to inform itself.”
